About The Alliance

Founded in 1979, the Alliance for Better Long Term Care is a nonprofit organization operated by a professional staff and volunteer Board of Directors. Our mission is to improve the quality of life and health care of Rhode Island residents of long-term care facilities, assisted living facilities, and those who receive licensed health care or hospice in the home.

Since 1998, the Alliance for Better Long Term Care has been the designated agency to house and manage the Rhode Island State Long Term Care Ombudsman Program (SLTCOP) . The RI SLTCOP staff and volunteers advocate for all residents of long-term care facilities in Rhode Island and those who receive licensed health care or hospice in the home.

Our work is founded on the conviction that all people who receive long-term care services should be provided with consistently safe, appropriate, compassionate, and person-centered care, have autonomy to direct their care and services, live in an environment of respect and dignity, be free from abuse, neglect, and mistreatment, and enjoy a quality of life which meets their individual needs and preferences.

Some board members may also contribute to the overall mission by:

  • Developing and maintaining resources for consumers of long-term care.
  • Monitoring and providing comment on the enforcement of regulations and oversight of LTC providers
  • Reading financial reports and analyzing differences and costs. Also regularly reviewing revenue, expenses, cash flows, investments, and other financial solvency matters
  • Working with the COO to write grant proposals

Please note: New board candidates are not expected to have all these skills or experiences, and we encourage anyone who feels passionate about our work and believes they can meaningfully contribute to apply!

Disclaimer: All applicants must be free of any conflicts of interest: Board members may not be employed by, contracted with, or have any financial involvement with any long-term care providers, nor any direct involvement in the licensing, certification, or regulation of long-term care providers in Rhode Island.

Please note: The Alliance for Better Long Term Care Inc. requires a criminal background check for all potential Board Members, Volunteers & Employees.
