What is it?
Building Bridges is the Alliance for Better Long Term Care’s intergenerational program that brings students together with nursing home residents for meaningful, relationship-based activities. Through shared experiences such as arts and crafts, games, music, conversation, and storytelling, participants build connections that enrich lives across generations.
The program has been part of the Alliance’s work for more than 20 years, reflecting our long-standing commitment to reducing isolation in nursing homes and promoting dignity, engagement, and quality of life for residents.
How does it work?
Many nursing home residents experience social isolation, with little or no regular contact from family or friends. At the same time, many children grow up without opportunities to form close relationships with older adults or grandparents. Building Bridges brings these two groups together in a natural, welcoming, and supportive environment.
Through regular, structured visits, students and residents participate in activities together and share stories, ideas, and laughter. Communication is simple and meaningful, often shaped by the same warmth and affection found between grandparents and grandchildren. These ongoing interactions help residents feel connected and valued, while students develop empathy, communication skills, and a deeper understanding of aging and long-term care.
