The Sweet Acts Program

In Memory of Catherine Gergora

Urgent Support for Seniors in Need

The Sweet Acts Program honors the life and legacy of Catherine Gergora, a fierce advocate, trusted colleague, and compassionate champion for residents in long-term care.

Catherine Gergora passed away on October 20, 2025, at the age of 95, leaving behind a legacy of advocacy, compassion, and joy.
One of nine children, Catherine lived a full and vibrant life marked by kindness, dedication, and an unwavering sense of justice. For more than 20 years, she served as a Long Term Care Ombudsman, giving her voice, her time, and her heart to residents who needed someone to stand up for them. She believed deeply that every person deserved dignity, respect, and to be treated with humanity, no matter their circumstances.

Though Catherine officially retired in 2022, her wisdom, humor, and presence never left our halls. She was known for her quick wit, her love of storytelling, and her undeniable sweet tooth – especially for chocolate. She brought warmth, laughter, and purpose to everything she did, reminding us daily why this work matters.

What the Sweet Acts Program Is

Named in honor of Catherine’s well-known sweet tooth and even sweeter spirit, the Sweet Acts Program reflects her belief that small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference, especially in moments of need.

The Sweet Acts Program provides immediate, flexible assistance to seniors living in Rhode Island’s long-term care communities who are facing unmet needs. When residents lack financial resources, family support, or timely access to essential items, the program allows the Alliance to act quickly ensuring no one goes without what they need to feel safe, comfortable, and respected.

What the Sweet Acts Program Provides

Donations support the rapid purchase of essential items, including:

  • Clothing and footwear
  • Toiletries and personal care items
  • Comfort items that support dignity and wellbeing
  • Essential belongings that protect residents’ rights, identity, and safety

How the Catherine Gergora Memorial Fund Supports Sweet Acts

The Catherine Gergora Memorial Fund was established to ensure that all gifts made in Catherine’s memory are permanently dedicated to supporting the Sweet Acts Program.

Contributions to the Memorial Fund are used exclusively to provide direct assistance to individuals in long-term care, allowing the Alliance to respond with compassion and urgency when residents are in need.

Every gift ensures that Catherine’s lifelong commitment to advocacy and compassion continues – meeting residents where they are, in the moment they need help most.
